Have you ever tasted an apple right after you plucked it from a tree? It's so much tastier than store-bought apples, the ones you have to peel the sticker off before you bite it. That's the experience Avon's 11,000 students are getting at school lunch. Avon's Food Service Coordinator Emily Cates and the third-generation owner of Beasley's Orchard Calvin Beasley have built a growing partnership that not only gives Avon students regular access to farm-fresh apples in their school lunches but that also provides a steady source of income for an important family owned and operated farm that grows specialty produce on about 250 acres just west of Town. Beasley's Orchard is a Hendricks County landmark where generations of families usher in the autumn each year at the Heartland Apple Festival, now in its 38th year. They're making an important impact on the next generation through school lunch.
